Abstract

This study explored differences in how medical and surgical patients compare on the degree of hospital Stress and their subjective physical status.
Subjects were 233 medical and surgical patients in three hospitals in Pusan and kyung Nam.
They responded to the Hospital Stress rating scale and a self report on physical status.
Medical and surgical patient differences on nine factors of the Hospital Stress scale and nine areas of physical conditions were reported as follows explored ;
There was not a statistically significantly difference at the .05 level in the total mean score for Hospital stress between medical patients and surgical patients.
The mean score were higher in items for medical patients than those of the surgical patients ;
'having strange machines around'.
'Being awakened in the night by the nurse.'
'Being aware of unusual smells around you.'
'Having a roommate who is unfriendly.'
'Feeling you are getting dependent on medications.'
'Not knowing for sure what illness you have.'
And the mean score were higher in items for surgical patients than those of the medical patients ;
'Having to be assisted with a bedpan.'
'Being fed through tubes'.
'Knowing you have to have an operation.'
The mean scores of the factor of unfamilior of surroundings for medical patients was higher than the mean score of the surgical patients.
There was a statistically significant difference at the .01 level in the total mean score for physical status between medical patients and surgical patients.
The mean scores were lower in subjective physical status for medical patients(M) than for surgical patients(S) ; Appetite(M : M=3.0508, S : m=3.4261)
Strength and energy(M : M=2.7034, S : M=3.2261), stomach condition(M : M=2.8983, S : M=3.4174), Urination(M : M=3.4068, S : M=3.8348), Your surroundings(M¡ÀM=3.2458, S : M=3.4783)
Patients with high score in Subjective physical status might be predicted have a high level of stress on admission.
